Optimal energy mix

Bonaire’s electricity supply consists of a combination of renewable and conventional energy sources. ContourGlobal generates electricity using wind energy, solar energy, and diesel generation, supported by battery storage. WEB Bonaire is responsible for the distribution of electricity across the island.

In recent years, renewable generation capacity has been further expanded. In addition to the existing wind farm at Morotin and the solar installation at Barcadera, a large-scale solar park has now been commissioned. This solar park has a capacity of approximately 5.3 MW and forms part of ContourGlobal’s hybrid energy infrastructure on Bonaire. In addition, the system has approximately 11.1 MW of wind power capacity and 14 MW of battery storage.

The combination of wind energy, solar energy, battery storage, and conventional generation makes it possible to integrate a larger share of renewable energy into the electricity system while maintaining the reliability of the electricity supply.

Bonaire’s energy transition continues to progress. Plans include the further expansion and modernization of renewable generation capacity, including the renewal of the Morotin wind farm in 2027.
