Why your web bill may be higher in 2026

Kralendijk, 9 March 2026 – Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB) has received many questions from customers in recent days regarding their February 2026 electricity bill. Several customers have noticed that their bill is higher than usual. WEB  communicated extensively in December about the changes that may affect these bills through its usual communication channels.

The higher amounts on the bill are related to new electricity and drinking water rates that came into effect on January 1, 2026. These rates were established at the end of 2025 by the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). According to the Electricity and Drinking Water Act BES, which has been in effect since 2016, the ACM is required to determine the maximum each year for the production and distribution of electricity and drinking water on Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

Many customers are only now seeing the change reflected on their bills because the first invoices with the new rates were sent out at the end of February. As a result, the increase may appear unexpected for some customers.

The adjustment of the rates are mainly related to a lower electricity subsidy in 2026. This means that a larger portion of the actual costs is now reflected in the rates. In addition, the cost of producing electricity and maintaining the network have increased as WEB prepares for further growth on Bonaire.

Due to these changes, both fixed charges and the price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) have increased for residential customers as well as for large consumers. This applies to customers with a standard connection and to customers who use Pagabon. For Pagabon customers, this means that the price per kWh has increased according to the new rate sheet.

WEB understands that higher energy and drinking water costs may raise questions among customers. For this reason, WEB will continue to inform customers in a timely manner about rate changes and remains in ongoing discussions with the relevant ministries regarding the affordability of energy and drinking water on the island.

WEB remains committed to providing a reliable electricity and drinking water network on Bonaire. At the same time, WEB is working on expanding renewable energy, so that the island will become less dependent on oil in the future.
