Kralendijk – November 25th 2022- The island of Bonaire experienced a double black out on November 24th 2022.The Blackout occurred due to problems with the transmission system equipment at the Karpata Powerplant.

In order to investigate this incident, a technical team has been engaged in order to conduct a thorough investigation of the root cause. The team consists of top management from Water -en EnergieBdedrijf Bonaire (WEB), Contour Global Bonaire (CGB), their technical staffs, along with local and international partners.

We will share the results of this investigation with the general public in due time.

 What happened:

At 03:03 P.M WEB Bonaire confirmed failures in the electricity supply and confirmed that they were experiencing a Black Out.

At 04:30 P.M WEB Bonaire gradually started to restore power connections in a number of neighborhoods on Bonaire. Restoring a system from a blackout require a very careful synchronization of re-energizing transmission lines, this can take up to several hours.

However due to an unexpected technical issue at 07:00 P.M a second blackout occurred and the system had to be reinitiated a second time.

At 03.00 A.M CGB experienced a third incidence of power generation failure that resulted in a load shedding in a few areas on Bonaire.

As of today Friday November 25th, the power generation at CGB will remain critical.

What we are doing about it:

This morning international partners are flying in and during the entire day investigations will take place. Both local and the international teams that worked together arduously in order to restore power for the island of Bonaire, will investigate and continue to monitor to stability of the grid in the coming days.

We are aware that next to the general discomfort, this situation has caused people to be disappointed because of the inability to enjoy their soccer games as well as planned festivities.

WEB and CGB apologizes for the inconvenience to the community
