Final phase of 10th EDF – Project in Belnem

Kralendijk, February 26th, 2022 – Water en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB) sees the expansion of the sewerage infrastructure in Belnem approaching its final phase. As project supervisor of the 10th EDF project, WEB would like to thank residents and companies for their understanding and the unavoidable inconvenience. We are happy to provide an update on the state of affairs.

The project concerns the expansion of the sewerage system in Belnem and Hato and started in May 2021. The aim is to relieve vacuum station 6 in Tera Kora and to connect Belnem and Hato to Bonaire’s vacuum sewerage network.

Sewerage in Belnem

Despite the necessary challenges, the work in Belnem is now in its final phase and restoration of the roads and the surrounding area can be anticipated. The project concerns:

  • the construction of a new vacuum station at Kaya Saturn;
  • trenching and laying approximately 4900 m of sewer pipes;
  • chopping, placing and connecting 76 collection wells;
  • completing (and partly preparing) the necessary house connections.

Work in progress

At the moment, the last 250 m of trench is being dug and the last 500 m of sewer pipes are being laid. House connections will be made to Kaya Jupiter and Kaya Pluto. The project team is working on the final installation work in the vacuum station.

Currently the first unpaved roads in Belnem have  been restored. Within the foreseeable future, the project team will repair the other unpaved roads and asphalt roads. Detailed visual images have been made of the original situation in the area. All streets and verges will be returned to their original state.

Hato

Trial pits are currently being made in Hato. Excavation work will begin in the first week of March. In Hato there will be approximately 1150 m of sewer pipes with 20 collection pits and 56 house connections. This extension will be connected to the existing vacuum station 3 at Kaya Amsterdam.

The entire 10th EDF project in Belnem and Hato is expected to be completed by the end of April.
